Charles Gatewood Exhibit to come to LA's Studio Servitu Saturday, April 28
April 16, 2012 — Los Angeles, CA — Fetish photography pioneer and “photographic anthropologist” Charles Gatewood’s work will be exhibited at Los Angeles’ premiere gallery space Studio Servitu on Saturday, April 28th and will include an appearance by the iconic artist himself.
Since 1964, Charles Gatewood has documented such diverse subjects as social protest, alternative and fetish culture, celebrity portraits, rock and roll, body modification, and the Wall Street area of lower Manhattan. Gatewood trained his camera on underground scenes, from the Beats and the dark alleys of 1970s Mardi Gras to modern primitives and extreme sexual fetishists. ”A photographic anthropologist at the fringes of Western culture,” the fetish photographer who has collaborated with William Burroughs, Spider Webb and Fakir Musafar, among others, has been chronicling the “seedier side” of American life for over three decades and includes capturing iconic images of the HellFire Club, Mardi Gras, and New York, Amsterdam, New Orleans and San Francisco’s party, drug, and gay scenes. Books of his work include collector’s issues of Forbidden Photographs, Primitives, True Blood and Badlands, as well as Photography for Perverts.
“Studio Servitu is honored to host Mr Gatewood’s artwork,” said studio co-owners Jane Jett and Miss Crash. “We are excited to provide Gatewood’s fans an opportunity to meet the legend himself and to view his artworks first-hand. This event will also provide Studio Servitu’s patrons exposure to a history of rare fetish, celebrity and underground art.”
The Gatewood archive contains over 10,000 prints, 250,000 negatives and slides, 35 documentary videos, plus correspondence, personal papers, manuscripts, special collections, and much more. Recently, the archive has grown to include hand-made collector’s editions of his work with Bob Dylan and William Burroughs by DanaDanaDana, as well as DVD editions of his videos produced by Anego Films. The artist has won numerous recognitions and awards, including the Leica Medal of Excellence for his photography.
A large portion of Charles Gatewood’s archives, including photos of celebrities Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Allen Ginsberg, Al Green, Abbie Hoffman, and others, as well as his iconic fetish and alt culture images will be on display at Studio Servitu. “This is a big show, my first LA exhibition in several years,” remarked Gatewood. “The photographs on display are my best–16 x 20 exhibition prints of my finest fetish portraits and nude studies. This is Charles Gatewood’s return gallery after a seven-year absence in Los Angeles.
