There is just one story I want to get out this week. A story that makes me angry, makes me sad, makes me realize just what scumbags there are out there. It’s a story that took place on Thanksgiving Day, a day that is supposed to be a festive time of thanks with family, friends, food and good times. However, in this case that was not the order of the day and the result is not only sad to read, but really and truly makes you say, “WTF??”. Travis Hawkins Beats Up and Nearly Kills Mallory Owens for having Gay Relationship with His Sister

During a family Thanksgiving dinner in Mobile, Ala., Travis Hawkins beat Mallory Owens, on the left in the photo, the girlfriend of his

sister, Alex Hawkins.

Hawkins did not approve of their lesbian relationship and allegedly brutally beat up reports the Daily Mail.

Ms. Owens was hospitalized for a broken nose and numerous facial injuries. Her eyes were swollen shut so bad that she needed to receive reconstruction surgery.

Hawkins was arrested on Sunday and charged with second-degree assault, and nothing more.

Owen’s mother Kristi Taylor told WKRG-TV: “He tried to kill her. He’s lucky he didn’t kill her. She’s lucky to be alive. I didn’t recognize her when I got here. It’s hard to look at her like that. I did not want her to go, I begged her not to go, knowing how the family felt about her. But she said, ‘They’re trying to be nice.’”

Owens’ sister Avery Godwin told www.AL.com that Travis called her on Friday and said “that he would finish what he started last night with Mallory.”

Earlier this year, Hawkins allegedly hit Owens over the head with a pipe wrench, but no charges were filed.

In response to the latest incident, a Facebook group entitled ‘Charge Travis Hawkins Jr. with the attempted murder of Mallory Owens’ has been started.

The family wants him charged with attempted murder and also as a hate crime. However, the state of Alabama’s hate crime law does NOT protect gay and lesbian people and the fact that Hawkins did not use a lethal weapon such as a gun or knife, the attempted murder charge may not fly. So, while the prosecutors and law enforcement look into this brutal crime, their hands may be tied and Hawkins could only be charged as is is with a second degree assault charge.

It is quite obvious that the state of Alabama, and 26 other states, need to changes their hate crime laws to include gay and lesbian people so that crimes like this do not continue to happen. In 2010 the FBI reported there were 1,470 offense based on sexual orientation bias in the state of Alabama alone!

I would hope that this scumbag will get more than he is charged with and that the attorney’s for the Owens family will continue to push law enforcement to put this piece of human trash in prison where he belongs and then let “Big Bertha” take care of him on night! He is the lowest of low and I hope they find a way to put him away for a long time.

Even after first reading this story and choking up over it, I am still emotional as I put this piece together. As a father and grandfather I pray that Mallory Owens will fully recover, get past this and lead a good life. We know she has the support of both families, her friend Alex and those who continue their support on Facebook. May God watch over her.
